1. AIDES-SOIGNANTS TRAINING

. The Mauritius Red Cross embarked on this part-time and free Aides-Soignants Course in 1984.
The training is made up of 47 hours-lectures extending over 18 months
Is prepared by the Chief Medical Officer of Mauritius Red Cross, Dr Khuleel Daureeawo, F.R.C.S. Covering common medical conditions.

MRCS recruits Lecturers from the local Hospitals or Private Clinics. At least 15 Specialist in different fields, 5 para-medical experts and 3 nursing officers.
1. Physiotherapist,
2. Nursing tutors,
3. Laboratory technologists,
4. Personnel from School of the Blind,
School of the Deaf,
Physically and Mentally Handicapped Institutions.

AREAS BENEFITTING FROM THE TRAINING
(A) HOME
To provide a high standard of clinical and specialised home for chronically ill and handicapped patients.


(B) PRIVATE HEALTH INSTITUTIONS

To provide Services in private Clinics, where there are often Nursing staff shortages

The Course is offered at the Society’s IVTB Approved West Branch.

This Course is destined to only adult members of the Red Cross who lack the necessary 5 G.C.E. Passes at Ord. level to enter the School of Nursing of the Ministry of Health of Mauritius. These members must be at least 16 years of age and have attained The School Certificate level with passes in any two subjects.


THE LEARNING PROCESS

(I) COURSE CONTENT

The Course is divided into once weekly one-hour lecture spread over 4 Academic Terms each term ending with the Red Cross Holiday:
First term … …Anatomy…. 10 hours
Medicine…. 4 hours
Second term First Aid … 6 hours
Surgery … 6 hours
Third term … Practical Nursing. 5 hours
Health Education. 5 hours
Rehabilitation… 4 hours
Fourth Term … Maternity … 3 hours
These weekly Lecturers cover a wide variety of subjects such as:
• First Aid,
• Human Anatomy,
• Traumatology,
• Hygiene,
• “Social Diseases”,
• Cardiovascular disease,
• General medical disease,
• Urology, maternity,
• Rehabilitation services,
• Clinical intensive care,
• Sport medicine,
• Health Education.

Hospital clinical attachment

The trainees undergoes First Aid maneuvers at the West Branch of MRCS using

(i) Manikins
(ii) Heart Defibrillators
(iii) Splinting of limbs
(iv) Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation equipment
