HEALTH SERVICES IN MAURITIUS
The Health services employ 650 doctors, 2700 nurses, 50 dentists
and 17 pharmacists. A total of 13,000 are employed in the
public Health services.
The 5 regional hospitals have 2500 beds.
In the private sector, there are 400 doctors, 14 private
clinics with 600 beds, 20private medical laboratories and
275 private pharmacies.
The infectious diseases of the past have largely been eliminated.
Through safe water and sanitation, combined public health
education and clinical programmes esp. for HIV/AIDS and national
vaccination programs.
Mauritius is facing a growing problem with Non Communicable
Diseases (NCD), Diabetes Mellitus, Strokes, Cancer and mental
disease.
There are 23 Area Health Centres, 2 Medi-Clinics and 1 Community
Hospital
The "Service d'Aide Medicale d'Urgence (SAMU) is attached
to each Accident and Emergency Dept and operates on a 24-hour
basis
Since 2001 the NCD Mobile Service" Caravane de Sante"
was introduced to screen people for NCD (Diabetes, hypertension,
visual problems, obesity, breast and cervical cancer. operating
in the late afternoons every day after working hours.
