3. International friendship and understanding

The aim is to share information, ideas and experiences with other youth members and groups but as well as with members from other National Societies by letter writing, e-mail, exchange of albums, gifts and by organising camps.

The first ever Youth Exchange between the Hunterdon County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Youth Section was held from the 20th to 28th of August 2002 in Mauritius.

The delegation included Carol Duh, who was the Youth Representative on the Chapter’s International Services Committee; Sri Adusumalli, a very active volunteer at the Chapter’s Disaster Response Team; Dolan Mason, the former Youth Representative on the Chapter’s Board of Directors and Douglas Pearson, a High School student grown up with the activities of the local Chapter, his parents having been associated with the Red Cross for over 20 years.

The group was chaperoned by the Chapter’s Director of Emergency Services, Mrs. Danielle Schratt. It is to be noted that it is Mrs. Schratt’s established rapport with the Deputy Director of the Youth Section, Mr. Suraj Gookool that made Mauritius a natural choice for this mission. Mrs. Schratt shared her duties with June Ejk, a Red Cross volunteer and previous Board member, who is also an Instructor Trainer in AED and CPR.

During their preparation, the group had an audience with the Mauritius Ambassador to the United Nations, His Excellency Jugdish Koonjul, who briefed them on the Mauritian customs and culture.

While in the island, the guests were lodged by Mr. Gookool and Mr. S. Jewootah, Mr. Gookool’s uncle and neighbour. The group taught CPR and AED to 17 members of the Mauritius Red Cross, youths and branch members inclusive. They also provided instructor training in these skills. The group also had the opportunity to visit some well known places of the island like Grand Bassin, Pamplemousses Garden, Alexandra Falls, Trou aux Cerfs, Mon Choisy beach and so on. The American Ambassador in Mauritius, His Excellency John Price honoured the delegation by receiving them in his office accompanied by Mr. Gookool and Mr. Lagesse, our Director General.

The delegation seized the opportunity of their visit to make various donations to the Mauritius Red Cross. Thus, 2 Adult and 2 Infant manikins, 4 AED (Automatic External Defibrilator) Trainers and various medical supplies were donated.

The Hunterdon County Chapter hosted a raffle in the month of September of two round trips airline tickets New York - London aboard British Airways. The sale of the tickets supported the out of pocket expenses for this mission.

The Youth Section thanks everyone involved in making this project a success and extends its gratitude to the members of the delegation for making us live this wonderful experience.

4. Dissemination of Red Cross and Red Crescent Principles and International Humanitarian Law

1. Members and public are taught the history and Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and the Geneva Conventions
